U.S. doubling range of 'Hymars' and provides long-range rockets to Ukraine

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on February 3rd that it would provide Ukraine with military assistance worth $2.175 billion, in response to the ongoing Russian invasion. This aid package includes the supply of long-range rockets to be used in Ukraine's "Himaas" high-mobility rocket artillery system. According to Reuters, these rockets are small-diameter ground-launched missiles (GLSDB) and will provide twice the range of conventional artillery shells. This move is aimed at disrupting Russian supply lines and command posts and is expected to impact the ongoing conflict significantly.

The Biden administration has decided to provide military aid to Ukraine while being mindful of avoiding any actions that could lead to an attack on Russia. The current range of Ukraine's "Hymers" system is limited to 70-80 kilometers, however, with the new small-diameter ground-launched missiles (GLSDB) provided by the U.S., its maximum range will increase to 150 kilometers. According to Reuters, this extended range will encompass all Russian military supply routes in eastern Ukraine and parts of southern Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. The Biden administration aims to provide military support while also ensuring that the weapons supplied are not used in a manner that would escalate tensions with Russia.

The latest military aid package from the US to Ukraine consists of 155mm shells, 181 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, and 250 Javelin anti-tank missiles. Despite repeated requests, the Ukrainian side has not received surface-to-surface missiles like the ATACMS, which have a range of 300 kilometers, as part of this military aid. The total amount of US military aid to Ukraine since the start of the invasion on February 24, 2022, has surpassed $29.3 billion.
